weekly reading 7/18-7/25

Rooted in Faith

We’ve each experienced days or seasons of spiritual spring. The rain is gentle and nourishes, the sun warms and gives life. There is peace. It is not hard to trust in God and His goodness, to happily dwell in His presence in these times.

Then, we’ve all lived through times that have felt as a spiritual desert. The flowers that have grown begin to wither under the unrelenting heat of daily stress and trials. No rain of relief comes to bring peace or solace. It is a lonely place where hearts turn hard and stray from the trust and faithfulness they had to God during the spiritual spring.

God has designed us to thrive in His presence, but in the desert place we find ourselves just trying to survive.

5 This is what the Lord says:
Cursed is the one who trusts in man,
    who draws strength from mere flesh
    and whose heart turns away from the Lord.
6 That person will be like a bush in the wastelands;
    they will not see prosperity when it comes.
They will dwell in the parched places of the desert,
    in a salt land where no one lives.
7 But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,
    whose confidence is in him.
8 They will be like a tree planted by the water
    that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
    its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
    and never fails to bear fruit

Jeremiah 17 : 5-8

Before getting caught up in the whirlwind of a new day, spend time devoted to meditating in God’s word and His presence. As you make this a consistent practice your faith will strengthen, until, as it is written, “It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit”

You are the source of true strength and growth. Forgive me as I am consumed by my plans and efforts. May my trust be firmly rooted in you so that my actions bear the fruit of Your presence growing in me.
In Jesus name, Amen.
